ABOUT ALLIE HAYNES

I graduated from The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in December 2020 with a BS in economics, summa cum laude, with a concentration in mathematics. I am passionate about community engagement and economic opportunities for all. I work for the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham as an Economic Development Specialist. In this role, I analyze data to conduct reports and strategic planning. I enjoy working with our member governments to promote economic development opportunities in the Greater Birmingham area.

While in college, I presented my research on improving education for refugee students in America at the UAB Research Expo, the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, and the World Congress for Undergraduate Research. In my economics classes, I used STATA to research the challenges working women face once they've had children. I also worked as a tutor for college students taking quantitative analysis, financial literacy, microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and business communications.

During my time there, I worked for several businesses (mainly nonprofits) in Birmingham in primarily marketing and communications. While working for nonprofits, I had limited budgets and resources, so I took advantage of many opportunities at UAB. UAB offered free software, so I taught myself how to use the Adobe Creative Suite. I became president of the American Marketing Association at UAB, where I built an executive team and advocated for business students at UAB. I also taught myself some HTML/CSS coding to better improve websites that needed a refresh. I have since trained interns and coworkers on many programs including Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, social media platforms, Canva, Planoly, Wix, Weebly, Wordpress, Squarespace, and Asana, which is used for project management.

I am currently freelancing for clients including Katherine Thrower, owner of Workshop. Workshop is a classroom and event space in Homewood, Alabama. I manage email communications, and general web updates. Katherine and I worked together at a nonprofit, and it has been a great experience getting to continue to empower women and small businesses. I also lead a workshop on digital organization, focusing specifically on Canva, Google Drive, and project planning.

I worked for Momentum Leaders from 2019 to 2021, a nonprofit focused on retaining and empowering women in leadership in Alabama. I managed marketing and communications interns, contracts for the upcoming biennial conference, and various creative projects. In 2021, as the Alumnae & Community Engagement Coordinator, I created graphics, fundraising materials, web design, blog posts, and webinar series. It has been a joy to work with such a large network of supportive women in business.

Last year, I worked as the Marketing & Events Coordinator for Red Mountain Grace, a nonprofit that provides housing to patients and their families receiving long-term medical care in Birmingham. In this role, I managed social media, graphics, and event planning.

I ran marketing and graphic design for the Alabama Interfaith Refugee Partnership, who works to support refugee and immigrant communities in Alabama. I was brought on to redesign their logo, website, and social media.

I was the graphic design intern at the UAB Institute for Human Rights, which focuses on promoting human rights and civil rights locally, nationally, and globally.

I was the advocacy intern at World Relief Memphis, which is a nonprofit specializing in refugee resettlement. In this position, I gained experience in marketing, grant-writing, and communications. Additionally, I have gained leadership experience as president of the American Marketing Association at UAB, as a Collat School of Business senator and committee head, and as an Honors College leader.

As a communications intern at REV Birmingham, an economic development nonprofit, I gained experience in marketing strategy and graphic design. You can read the articles I wrote about developments in the Woodlawn community under the "blog posts + interviews" tab.
